Manchester is a city with sport at the heart of it

It was no accident that the Commonwealth games were awarded to Manchester at the turn of the Millennium as sport has always been important to the city that has two top class football teams with Manchester United’s status legendary.  The Velodrome was already established as the National cycling centre and was already producing top Olympic and touring world beaters. It has been home to test cricket at the Old Trafford Cricket ground belonging to Lancashire County Cricket Club. Due to the Common wealth games sport city was created and regenerated an almost derelict part of the city. This is now the biggest concentration of sporting facilities in Europe. The main stadium has been converted into the Etihad home to Manchester city. As well as the Velodrome there is the national squash centre. state of the art gymnasium, Manchester regional arena that seats 6,500 spectators as well as Tennis facilities.
